First-year applicants, transfer applicants and current USC students applying for the BFA program at the USC Glorya Kaufman School of Dance will each submit slightly different versions of the online USC Kaufman Portfolio. All first-year and transfer applicants must also complete the USC Undergraduate Application.
The USC Kaufman Portfolio is currently available on SlideRoom (which students will access through the Common Application). All application materials are due by December 1, 2016.
The USC Kaufman Portfolio includes the below components.
Two Video Auditions
Present 2 solos or excerpts in contrasting styles. Each piece may be no longer than one minute and thirty seconds.
You are welcome to submit original choreography. You may include one example of partnering or group work, so long as you are easily identifiable.
While you need not submit professional videos, the faculty committee must be able to clearly see you in order to observe your technique and musicality. Shoot the videos in close proximity to the camera while maintaining your full body in frame and do not include any musical overlays. A dance studio, if available, is an ideal location. If you film your videos using the camera on a cell phone, please hold the phone horizontally so the video is the largest size possible. Do not use works edited with jump cuts, dissolves, etc. Provide information about each solo under the Forms section and order and label your media items appropriately.
The committee will only review the videos of those applicants who follow the guidelines described above.
Please contact Anne Aubert-Santelli, Director of Admission & Students Services, at (213) 821-6725 or firstname.lastname@example.org if you have difficulty managing the video request.
One Minute Video Response
Upload a one minute video responding to the prompt: Being a part of The New Movement at USC Kaufman means honoring the past while looking ahead to the future. Where do you think dance will be when you graduate from our program?
One Page Dance Resume
The one page dance resume allows us to understand your dance background. You must follow the format of the USC Kaufman Dance Resume Sample. If you do not yet have your USC ID number, contact (213) 740-1111 or check any formal mail you have received from the University (you can generally find the ten-digit number somewhere). If you do not yet have the results of your SAT or ACT examinations, please indicate “In Progress:” followed by the month in which you plan to take the exam.
Answer the following question in 100 words or less: Why are you applying to the USC Glorya Kaufman School of Dance? (Current USC students will provide a 500-750 word Statement of Objectives in lieu of the short answer and Common Application writing requirements.)
You should provide two photographs, one headshot that allows us to see your face clearly and one action shot that showcases your favorite dance style. Professional photographs are not necessary. No group shots please.
Additional details and instructions about each component of the USC Kaufman Portfolio are provided on SlideRoom.
