As the lights dimmed, USC Kaufman Fourth-Year student Rhaine Marquardt took a deep breath of gratitude.

“It hit me all at once,” Marquardt said. “This wasn’t just another performance. It was the start of my final chapter here at USC and a glimpse of what a professional audition might feel like.”

USC Kaufman’s annual Senior Spotlights—a signature event produced by the school’s Career Services team—returned earlier this fall, highlighting the creativity, versatility, and artistic evolution of the Class of 2026. The evening offered a dynamic mix of solos, duets, and ensemble works, each piece reflecting the dancers’ technical expansion and the distinctive voices they have honed over their four years in the program.

A cornerstone of USC Kaufman’s commitment to preparing students for life beyond the university, Senior Spotlights brings influential dance professionals from across the country into the studios to experience the depth and range of the graduating class. After the performance, students and guests engage in a networking reception, creating space for authentic conversations about artistry, professional paths, and opportunities on the horizon.

“It’s such a pleasure and joy to see how far this class has come,” said Bruce McCormick, Associate Professor of Practice and lead faculty member for Career Services. “Senior Spotlights is designed to center their growth and give them a platform where industry leaders can witness their potential. It’s amazing how many opportunities arise from just this one performance.”

Creating momentum for what comes next

The Career Services team is composed of dedicated faculty and staff who work year-round to prepare students for the transition into the professional landscape. Senior Spotlights plays a key role in that mission by bringing choreographers, artistic directors, and company representatives directly into the dancers’ creative environment. For many graduating students, the event has led to auditions, rehearsal invitations, and even full-time contracts.

“The format allows us to really advocate for these students,” said USC Kaufman Lecturer and Career Services team member Grasan Kingsberry. “The professionals who attend are observing individuals they may one day hire. It makes the evening incredibly meaningful.”

This year’s presentation featured a wide range of styles and choreographic voices, including original student work and pieces by faculty and guest artists. The program concluded with a special work created exclusively for the Class of 2026, choreographed by choreographer and USC Kaufman alum Jakevis Thomason, offering the cohort a moment to celebrate their collective journey as they prepare for their final semester at USC.

A night of connection and community

Following the performance, dancers and guests gathered in the foyer of the Glorya Kaufman International Dance Center for a lively reception. Conversations flowed easily as students shared their aspirations and received feedback from visiting professionals. Among those in attendance were USC Kaufman Claude and Alfred Mann Professor in Dance Kyle Abraham, Bessie Award winner Hope Boykin, MOVE|NYC| Founder and CEO Nigel Campbell, Charlotte Ballet Artistic Director Alejandro Cerrudo, and Kaufman Board of Councilors member Kenny Ortega.

As the Class of 2026 moves toward graduation, Senior Spotlights stands as both a celebration and a launching point that honors their growth at USC Kaufman while opening doors to the next chapter of their artistic lives.
