Dylan Balka

Edison, NJ

BFA Class of 2019

Where did you train?

I trained at Bodies in Motion Dance Centre in Parlin, NJ for five years.  I then trained at Joffrey Ballet School in New York City as a jazz and contemporary trainee during my last two years of high school.

What inspires you?

In choreography, I find myself inspired by my personal experiences, musical accents, and simple day-to-day happenings. I’m also inspired by other dancers and their own movement aesthetics.

Describe yourself in three words.

Distinct. Spirited. Intuitive.

Tell us a fun fact about you.

While at Joffrey Ballet School, at age 17, I was able to live on my own in Brooklyn with another dancer. We share the same exact birthday too!

What does it mean to be a part of USC Kaufman’s inaugural class?

It is an honor and absolutely humbling. The drive and talent of the other students are unbelievably incredible, and the faculty is simply legendary. We will be at the forefront of bringing change to the Los Angeles dance community. It hasn’t all set in yet!
