Amelia Jane (AJ) Joehl was born in South Korea and raised in Alabama, where she began her dance training in ballet, contemporary, jazz and hip-hop. Her primary training continued after moving to Dallas, Texas, at Dance Industry Performing Arts Center. AJ has worked extensively with artist Jarell Rochelle, who immersed her in the Houston battle community and introduced her to styles such as popping and krump. Her time as a protégé with Jarell’s XpressVibe company inspired her to investigate ideas of hybridity and intersections between these new styles and the concert styles in which she had been training from a young age.
AJ is pursuing her BFA in Dance at the USC Glorya Kaufman School of Dance, where she has explored movement ideas with William Forsythe, Jermaine Spivey and Barak Marshall and has performed repertory from elite choreographers such as Jiří Kylián, Ohad Naharin, Merce Cunningham and Yin Yue. She also had the opportunity to work as a teaching artist through Kaufman Connections, providing dance classes to students at 32nd Street Elementary School and furthering her passion for community outreach.
AJ’s dream is to share her love of dance with audiences and communities by joining a professional contemporary company where she can continue to grow as a performer and immerse herself in a range of repertory with various artists and choreographers. In the future, she also hopes to explore other facets of the dance industry including commercial work and choreography.
