Born with the Aloha spirit, Kyson Kai is an Okinawan, Japanese artist from Honolulu, Hawaii. His early days spent swimming through the open sea shaped a love for movement that would later flourish within the studios of Mid-Pacific School of the Arts. There he trained in ballet and contemporary techniques eventually branching out to Honolulu Dance Studio where he also trained in jazz and hip-hop.
Kyson is currently earning his BFA at the USC Kaufman School of Dance, where, in his mission to become a hybrid artist, he dives into a plethora of movement practices. From Dancehall to Locking or Classical Partnering, Kyson is relentless in his pursuit to master often contradictory movement techniques and cohesively integrate them into his practice. Further reflecting his versatility, Kyson has also engaged with a diverse range of luminaries such as Kyle Abraham, Caili Quan, Bintou Dembéle, Brett Easterling, Nina Flagg, Tyce Diorio, and performed works by choreographers such as Maxine Doyle, Gregory Lau, and Ryan Yamauchi. While he aims for a career in performance, Kyson simultaneously harbors a love for choreography. His creative works have premiered in fashion shows, short films and classic proscenium settings.
Alongside his BFA, Kyson will graduate with a Masters of Science from the Iovine and Young Academy. These studies in the intersectional areas of Business, Technology and Design demonstrate that his notion of multidisciplinary skills transcends the dance studio and touches all facets of his life.
