Layla White (she/her)
Atlanta, GA
BFA Class of 2028
Where did you train?
For 16 years, I trained at Academy of the Arts, in Metro Atlanta, in ballet, pointe, tap, jazz, contemporary, musical theater, hip hop, African and more. Additionally, I trained for multiple years in Commercial Dance at Xcel Talent Agency, in its Teen Program. I gained technical training at Atlanta Dance Connection, Fleet Dance Company, Dekalb School of the Arts, and summer intensives at Alvin Ailey Dance Theater, Joffrey Ballet, Debbie Allen Dance Academy, and the Kennedy Center Dance Lab.
What inspires you?
I gain inspiration from our beloved legendary songstress Nina Simone in which her music fuels passion, resilience, and empowerment. Her captivating fusion of jazz, blues, gospel and classical music invokes the spirit of my ancestors and contributes to my creative artistry and versatility in dance. Moreover, I am truly inspired by my community. When I share my art, it is my intention to constantly pay homage to my family, friends and mentors who have guided my path through supporting, uplifting, and helping lay the foundation for my continued growth and success. My community inspires me to continuously be the change I often seek by connecting the morals of representation, authenticity, creativity and enduring love.
Describe yourself in three words.
Grounded. Grateful. Confident.
Tell us a fun fact about you.
A fun fact about me is that I was born as a preemie at only 2 pounds! Also, I have my own book club called the “F(READ)om Readers” which aims to empower readers and promote the books that have recently been banned within public school systems. My favorite book is entitled: “All About Love” by bell hooks
