Malachi Ashley Stevens is a multidisciplinary artist, combining their skills as a professional dancer, choreographer, poet, and anti-war activist. Their journey began in the church, where dance served as a spiritual outlet, igniting a deep passion for movement as a form of expression. They formally trained at the Divine Dance Institute (DDI) before continuing their education at the Baltimore School for the Arts, graduating in 2021. Currently, Stevens is pursuing higher education at USC Kaufman, with a minor in Entertainment, Media, and Society at the Annenberg School of Communication. This academic background provides them with a unique perspective on the privileges afforded to systems of power, enriching their creative vision.
Stevens has performed in works by renowned choreographers such as Kyle Abraham, Hope Boykin, Tassandra Chavez, Peter Chu, E. Moncell Durdan, Micaela Taylor, Justin Peck, Helen Pickett, and Jiří Kylián, experiences that have shaped their sense of artistic rigor and excellence. They have also been honored with an artistic excellence scholarship for their creative achievements.
A passionate advocate for social change through the arts, Stevens specializes in crafting poetic narratives and movement prompts that challenge audiences to think critically. Stevens is also a practitioner of Capoeria, which has developed their musicality in a profound way. Their goal is to use entertainment and education as tools for activism, sharing stories through public performance art that inspire thought and spark dialogue.
