Sophia Oddi

San Marino, CA

BFA Class of 2019

Where did you train?

I began my training at Danse Plus in Monte Carlo. After moving to California, I spent some time at both Pasadena Civic Ballet and Pasadena Dance Theater. In high school, I pursued dance at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts.

What inspires you?

In dance and choreography specifically, I tend to draw inspiration from every aspect of life, whether that be from a conversation, a shape, or an emotion. As a dancer, I am blown away by the constant evolution and ingenuity that we see each day in dance. This is what inspires me to be a dancer: knowing that for the rest of my life I will be pursuing something that is ever-changing and evolving, and knowing that I can help shape what future generations come to think of as dance. My greatest inspiration, however, will always be my father. A dancer himself, he taught me that dance is so much more than movement and pretty shapes. If it weren’t for his wisdom and insight, I know that I would not be dancing today.

Describe yourself in three words.

Progressive. Ambitious. Unexpected.

Tell us a fun fact about you.

I am partially deaf in my left ear, so my friends like to whisper in it.

What does it mean to be a part of USC Kaufman’s inaugural class?

Being a part of USC Kaufman’s inaugural class is something I still can’t seem to grasp. My peers and I will be learning from some of the most influential and innovative dancers and choreographers of our time. Not only that, we will be exposed to more dance styles than I could ever hope for.

This program is so unique in that it is exposing dancers to what is to come in the dance world while upholding the values and impact that dance has had in the past. The interdisciplinary approach that the USC Kaufman school will offer is unlike anything I have seen in any other program.

This inaugural class is made up of some of the most diverse dancers who will each bring something completely unique and different to the program. I could not be more thrilled and honored to be part of this inaugural class and pave the way for the future USC Kaufman dancers to come.
