There is no doubt that the college application process can be a stressful time in your life. I remember researching all kinds of dance programs around the country as I tried to decide where I might fit best. Luckily for me, The USC Glorya Kaufman School of Dance hosted many in-person events for prospective students like myself. These events give you an understanding of what a day in the life as a USC Kaufman BFA looks like.

I was fortunate to attend a USC Kaufman event in NYC my senior year of high school before I applied. Even though I wasn’t able to visit the campus, see the studios, or meet any of the BFAs, after taking classes and meeting some of the professors I knew that this program was exactly where I wanted to be. Upon coming to USC Kaufman, I was fortunate enough to work at on-campus recruitment events like the Open House. I have seen how instrumental they can be in helping prospective students envision their next four years.

Making the most of on-campus events

If you can make it to one of USC Kaufman’s on-campus events, you want to make sure you are taking full advantage of everything it has to offer! Prior to coming, you will register through USC Kaufman’s website. If you can, it is best to plan early. Spots at these events are limited to ensure accommodations for everyone.

You’ll notice when registering that there are different options for you to choose from. This is so you can “design your own” schedule. You register for the classes, info sessions, lecture demonstrations, and tours that you are most interested in. No matter what track you choose, rest assured that you will definitely be dancing and learning with some of the greatest professors out there! The classes are designed to give prospective students a sample of what our classes in the program are actually like. So, be sure to take in as much as you can and ask any burning questions that you might have.

Discover USC Open House

While prospective students are taking dance-based classes, Discover USC Open House allows family members and loves ones to attend information sessions. This way, they also get an idea of what it would look like to apply and commit to USC Kaufman. Also, weaved into this action-packed day are building tours. Current BFAs love participating in on-campus events because prospective students always bring a new and exciting energy into the building. Whenever you have time, don’t be afraid to introduce yourself to a current BFA student. Ask them about their experience with the program! Many of us love to talk about USC Kaufman and this is really one of the best ways for prospective students to gain insight.

Lastly, remember that your Discover USC Open House experience isn’t just limited to USC Kaufman! While dancing might be your focus, make sure to check out other offerings on campus as well. Our program is distinct in that it is nestled inside one of the country’s leading private research institutions, housed in one of the country’s leading entertainment capitals. I always recommend that prospective students take an official campus tour, attend financial aid presentations, and stroll through the involvement fair.

Personally, I feel that there is no better way to envision your future at USC Kaufman than by attending an on-campus event like the Discover USC Open House. It is always an exciting day for everyone involved. Hopefully it will leave you feeling inspired to take on any of the challenges you might face when considering your collegiate or career options.
