Just a year after its opening, the Glorya Kaufman International Dance Center is set to welcome a new neighbor this fall: the USC Village. The $700 million retail and residential project is set to open in August, in time for incoming students to move in and returning students to explore as the school year begins.

The Glorya Kaufman International Dance Center will be home to three summer intensives in 2017, through USC Kaufman’s partnerships with leading international dance-makers.
Complexions Contemporary Ballet will offer its first summer intensive program at the Center, while Hubbard Street Dance Chicago and Gaga/People will return after holding intensives at USC Kaufman last summer.

KABC7’s reporter Adrienne Alpert visited the Glorya Kaufman International Dance Center. Alpert spoke to the school’s founder and namesake Glorya Kaufman and Vice Dean and Director Jodie Gates. BFA students had the chance to share their experience within the program and showcase their work in technique class.
“Hundreds of dancers auditioned to get in to study in this state-of-the-art building. Only about 50 have been accepted… With its curving staircase and soaring ceilings, a visitor doesn’t have to be a dancer to be impressed by this facility,” said Alpert.

USC Kaufman’s building opening was covered in online dance publication 4dancers.org earlier this month. Writer Catherine L. Tully outlines the building’s features and explains how it will function in the Los Angeles dance community.

The Glorya Kaufman International Dance Center, the largest dance-dedicated building on a private university campus, had its grand opening Oct. 5 in a stylish celebration of movement, scholarship and the arts.
At noon, several hundred people filled the courtyard of the handsome Italianate Collegiate Gothic building, a crowd that included more than two dozen USC trustees, many senior administrators and deans and USC Distinguished Professors who were introduced by Robert A. Cutietta, dean of the USC Glorya Kaufman School of Dance.

Backstage’s Sept. 7 article tells readers of USC Kaufman’s initial conception, diverse faculty, and new building, among advice from Dean Robert Cutietta on applying to be one of the 18 accepted applicants per class.
“Highlighting the abilities of a ballet dancer in the hip-hop realm, for example, shows versatility and potential for growth,” writes Backstage journalist Briana Rodriguez.

The brand new Glorya Kaufman International Dance Center is filled with the latest equipment, including six gleaming new pianos placed in its studios. Thanks to the generosity of the family of Lenai Wilkerson, a BFA student in the inaugural class, one of these pianos now has been named.

MATT Construction together with staff and faculty from USC Kaufman celebrated the structural topping out of the new Glorya Kaufman International Dance Center. A barbque lunch was held in appreciation of the hard work and efforts of the dedicated construction team in reaching this important building milestone.

USC Kaufman staff donned hardhats for a tour of the soon-to-be-built Glorya Kaufman International Dance Center. The three-story building has a sizable footprint with over 50,000 square feet dedicated to studios, classrooms, offices and more.
