Join us for Discover USC Kaufman NYC on Saturday, September 15, 2018 or Sunday, September 16, 2018. Each morning will begin with welcoming remarks from Vice Dean & Director Jodie Gates, followed by ballet, contemporary and hip-hop master classes with faculty. Please note that this event is only open to juniors and seniors.

USC Kaufman’s newest class of BFA freshmen will become the school’s fourth class–this is the first year that the school will be completely full, with freshmen through seniors lining the halls.

Between a trip to the Palais Garnier for an incredible program of new works (on none other than the Paris Opéra Ballet, of course) and a dazzling visit to the Louvre, my trip to Paris would have been complete. Those two experiences alone covered bucket-list items and more, and with a private backstage tour of the Garnier, I was awed completely by the rich history of Parisian art.

USC Kaufman BFA dance majors have worked with over 45 artists since the program’s launch in 2015, from their very first day with Complexions Contemporary Ballet’s co-artistic director Desmond Richardson to a recent residency with bboy and Rock Steady Crew senior vice president YNOT.

This spring, USC Kaufman dance majors are working to fill large, legendary shoes under the guidance of the school’s expert faculty. The school’s Spring Dance Performance, set for late April, features work by three of the dance world’s “Living Legends:” Jiří Kylián, Paul Taylor and William Forsythe — choreographers with whom the USC Kaufman faculty share great connection. Through this production, the faculty–including Forsythe, himself–will pass their own knowledge on to the next generation of dancers.

The USC Kaufman audition season is a very exciting time for the current BFA dance majors. Personally, I love getting to know new people, so I jumped at the opportunity to meet potential future classmates. I was even inspired me to do things most would never volunteer for on a weekend: waking up at 6 a.m. and spending approximately 10 hours in the Kaufman International Dance Center, both Saturday and Sunday.

Over the past year and a half, the class of 2020 worked in improvisation and composition courses to discover the possibilities of the choreographic process. For six of the students, this work culminated in the Student Works Performance, which took place Nov. 28 and 29 at the Glorya Kaufman International Dance Center.
