This fall, USC Kaufman welcomes four brand new Artists in Residence, each from a different background and with a diverse range of dance experience. The four choreographers—Aszure Barton, Marjani Forté-Saunders, Barak Marshall and Jermaine Spivey—will set work on BFA dance students throughout the year.

In a collaboration between the USC Kaufman School of Dance and USC Thornton School of Music, choreographers and composers premiered live and recorded works this Wednesday in Bovard Auditorium. Six collaborative pieces, accompanied live by chamber music ensemble yMusic, comprised the evening, titled Caught in the Chamber.

The New York Times detailed Lumberyard Contemporary Performing Arts’ summer 2018 season; included is the premiere of a new work by USC Kaufman faculty member d. Sabela Grimes.
The as-yet-untiled multimedia dance piece will debut at the Bridge Street Theatre in Catskill on July 27.

This March, educators gathered for USC Kaufman’s second annual teaching summit, The Cypher, which focused on combining a dance conservatory setting with hip-hop’s social context to form a comprehensive and informative curriculum. Faculty member Tiffany Bong led the two-day conference, with support from professors E. Moncell Durden and d. Sabela Grimes.

This March, USC Kaufman will again host The Cypher, a hip-hop education summit that gathers both educators and dancers for an in-depth discussion about hip-hop in the classroom. Organized by faculty member Tiffany Bong—with support from professors E. Moncell Durden and d. Sabela Grimes—the two-day conference begins with a session for invited guests on March 3, 2018 and opens to all registrants on March 4.

The Boston Globe detailed the Boston Ballet’s 2018-2019 season in a recent article; included is the premiere of a new work by USC Kaufman faculty member William Forsythe.
“Full on Forsythe,” (March 7-17) will open the company’s spring season, featuring three of Forsythe’s works, one of which is currently being created for the occasion.

Last week, Artforum featured the Shed’s new twelve-day “Prelude” program in an article. This event will feature works by artists ranging from USC Kaufman faculty member and world-renowned choreographer William Forsythe to musician Azealia Banks.
“‘Prelude’ begins to demonstrate our mission to nurture artistic invention by commissioning and presenting new work for a wide audience,” said Alex Poots, founding artistic director and CEO of the Shed.

ArtNet News featured The Shed’s newest program in an article last week–it’s a program that not only includes USC Kaufman faculty member William Forsythe, but also performance artist Tino Seghal and musician Azealia Banks.
“If you can work with a wide range of artists, from Azealia Banks to William Forsythe to Tino Sehgal to Kunlé Adeyemi, and calibrate that well, the rest falls into place,” said Shed artistic director Alex Poots.

espite growing up without any formal training, Fuentes was cast as a dancer in the cult-classic movie “Dirty Dancing” during his college years, which set him off on a career as a performer. Now, Fuentes serves as a lecturer for the USC Glorya Kaufman School of Dance, leading a course which covers a breadth of ballroom styles, geared towards non-dance majors.
