Student Advice: 10 things to know before applying

By Whitney Hester

August is almost here, which means the start of a new school year. New students going into college or getting ready to apply for colleges: you may think that you are completely prepared for life in a BFA program. Coming from a performing arts high school, I assumed I was completely prepared!  However, listed below are ten things I wish I had known before applying to college dance programs.

Student Blog: An individual, not just one of many

By Paulo Hernandez-Farella

Deciding which college to attend was one of the hardest decisions I have made to date, but as each day ends, I am thankful to attend USC Kaufman. USC Kaufman is the most progressive and unique dance program in the country today, and maybe even the world. From our repertory to our artistic guests, USC Kaufman will give you incredible training and simultaneously enable you to expand your résumé.

Student Blog: Opportunities knock

By Alyssa Allen

USC Kaufman’s environment produces many opportunities where dancers and artists can collaborate. We are able to start building connections with other artists on campus that will remain strong after graduation and throughout our professional endeavors. Many of these collaborations have blossomed into friendships that will surely last a lifetime. I believe that now is the best time to collaborate–we are all hungry to create, and are willing to do it for free (a rare opportunity in the working field).

Student Blog: Hidden university treasures

By Rachel Walton

USC is a world-renowned university for many reasons: including its famous alumni, impeccable marching band, and memorable fight song (Fight on!). However, with a student body size averaging 44,000 and a campus size of 226 acres, there are bound to be many more secrets to the campus than the ones I’ve uncovered thus far. That being said, after exploring USC for the past two years, I’ve learned a few quirky things that I’m dying to share.

By Lenai Wilkerson

At Kaufman, inspiration is always in the air. I find myself constantly inspired in and out of classes by how beautiful my peers are as artists and individuals. I feel incredibly blessed every day to dance with these people because we all have something different to offer.

Student Blog: Hubbard Street choreographers in Los Angeles

By Justin Epstein

I’m just finishing up my first week at Hubbard Street Dance Chicago’s Pre-Professional Choreographic Intensive at USC, and it has been incredible. At Hubbard Street, I have had the opportunity to be involved in the choreographic process of Penny Saunders and Pablo Piantino’s latest piece (which has yet to be named).

Student Blog: From meeting to mentorship

By Rachel Walton

One of the first words many students use to describe USC Kaufman is family. Within the first week of freshman year, we established a community “cypher” environment among all of the students and faculty. We celebrate the diversity in our community–backgrounds, talents, and interests.

Student Blog: A student’s summer schedule

By Jackie Schiffner

As odd as it may sounds, a summer away from school when you are part of USC Kaufman is far too long! While we all appreciate a few days off after our spring performances and finals, a three-month break from the rigor of our schedule was a huge adjustment for me last summer, not to mention a long stretch without seeing my Kaufman family every day.

Student Blog: Thank you, Paris

By Mary Mallaney

As I’m writing this, I’m sitting on a plane headed back to the States, and leaving one of the most special cities in the world, Paris. I can’t truly say that I’m only happy or only sad to be leaving, but I am sure that I’m feeling grateful.

Student Blog: Parisian art and activities

By Brendan Evans

As I sit down to write this blog and reflect on my last two weeks in Paris, I realize that there is so much of this experience I cannot put into words. This week we have had many opportunities to explore Parisian art and expand our minds in new ways. Our week began at the foot of the Sacre Couer Church (or The Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Paris) in Montmartre.
