Student Blog: Hubbard Street choreographers in Los Angeles

By Justin Epstein

I’m just finishing up my first week at Hubbard Street Dance Chicago’s Pre-Professional Choreographic Intensive at USC, and it has been incredible. At Hubbard Street, I have had the opportunity to be involved in the choreographic process of Penny Saunders and Pablo Piantino’s latest piece (which has yet to be named).

Student Blog: From meeting to mentorship

By Rachel Walton

One of the first words many students use to describe USC Kaufman is family. Within the first week of freshman year, we established a community “cypher” environment among all of the students and faculty. We celebrate the diversity in our community–backgrounds, talents, and interests.

Student Blog: A student’s summer schedule

By Jackie Schiffner

As odd as it may sounds, a summer away from school when you are part of USC Kaufman is far too long! While we all appreciate a few days off after our spring performances and finals, a three-month break from the rigor of our schedule was a huge adjustment for me last summer, not to mention a long stretch without seeing my Kaufman family every day.

Student Blog: Thank you, Paris

By Mary Mallaney

As I’m writing this, I’m sitting on a plane headed back to the States, and leaving one of the most special cities in the world, Paris. I can’t truly say that I’m only happy or only sad to be leaving, but I am sure that I’m feeling grateful.

Student Blog: Parisian art and activities

By Brendan Evans

As I sit down to write this blog and reflect on my last two weeks in Paris, I realize that there is so much of this experience I cannot put into words. This week we have had many opportunities to explore Parisian art and expand our minds in new ways. Our week began at the foot of the Sacre Couer Church (or The Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Paris) in Montmartre.

Student Blog: More than just a pretty place in Paris

By Beau Foley

The USC Kaufman Paris Maymester program immediately introduced us to the city through a unique lens. We toured Paris the first day through the eyes of kings in the 1600s and architects in the 1800s, and finally discovering famous places in modern day France.

Student Blog: Arriving in Paris

By Jake Tribus

After an 8-hour-long flight, you could imagine how sore my body was, and the lack of sleep wasn’t helping either. The only thing keeping me positive was the thought of walking down the streets of the City of Love, and how I would soon be learning about the salon culture of Paris, in USC Kaufman’s first ever Maymester program.

Student Blog: Dance On! Week

By Jackie Schiffner

As part of a brand new program, we have the opportunity to develop brand new traditions on the USC campus. One of these traditions that began last year was Dance On! Week. With its purpose of promoting dance across campus, Dance On! Week involves all dance-enthusiasts from BFA majors, dance minors, elective students, dance clubs and crews, and all patrons of the arts.

Student Blog: A day in the life at USC Kaufman

At Kaufman, we function as a conservatory-based program within a major research university. Having that status–as a college student majoring in dance–can mean quite a heavy load. But do not be discouraged by busy college life. I am going to walk you through a typical day at Kaufman.

Student Blog: Spring performance preparations

By Alyssa Allen

Since January of this year, we’ve been learning and rehearsing diverse repertory to present at our BFA Spring Dance Performance. Including an excerpt of Jiri Kylian’s Falling Angels and Sarabande (staged by Fiona Lummis), Victor Quijada’s Empirical Quotient, an excerpt of William Forsythe’s Enemy in The Figure (staged by Ayman Harper), and new works by Raphael Xavier, Vice Dean Jodie Gates, Christopher Scott and Jessica Lee Keller, our program is extremely diverse and covers such a range of artistry–I feel so fortunate to learn from these legendary choreographers.
