Achinta S. McDaniel, USC Glorya Kaufman School of Dance lecturer, considers her work as an Indian American choreographer to be contemporary. While her choreography employs some classical Indian elements, including Kathak, she views her work as a unique American creation. For the upcoming USC Kaufman debut at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, McDaniel created a new piece titled “1947” with the BFA first and second year students.

Lecturer Bret Easterling joined Batsheva Dance Company in Tel Aviv, Israel after graduating from college. He danced with them for seven years under the art direction of Ohad Naharin. Once he left, Easterling began working as a stager of Naharin’s work for collegiate dance programs and companies. For the upcoming USC Kaufman debut at The Wallis, he is staging Naharin’s “Minus 16” with BFA juniors and seniors.

This semester, two-time Emmy Award-winning choreographer Tessandra Chavez set a new work on BFA students from the USC Glorya Kaufman School of Dance. Her piece, titled “Big White Room,” will premiere at the USC Kaufman debut at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts on April 21-23, 2022.

On March 9, the USC Asian Pacific Islander Faculty and Staff Association (APIFSA), USC Asian Pacific American Student Assembly (APASA), Asian Pacific American Student Services (APASS) and the USC Office of Religious and Spiritual Life (ORSL) held a vigil for victims of the Atlanta shooting that occurred on March 16, 2021.

This semester, BFA students will have the opportunity to work with renowned choreographers and to learn repertory that will be presented at the USC Kaufman Spring Dance Performance. The students will learn works from USC Kaufman faculty and Artists in Residence, as well as guest choreographers.

This semester, the USC Glorya Kaufman School of Dance welcomes three new Artists in Residence: Michael Breeden, Tessandra Chavez and Toyin Sogunro. These world renowned artists will work with the BFA students over the next three years.

On Friday, Feb. 11 and Saturday, Feb. 12, the USC Glorya Kaufman School of Dance is partnering with USC Visions and Voices to present Doug Varone and Dancers. This livestream event will showcase pieces from the Doug Varone and Dancers company repertory, as well as an original work set on BFA dancers.

This semester, fourth year BFA students have the opportunity to participate in Senior Seminars curated by Professor Bonnie Oda Homsey. Next month, professionals in advocacy and entertainment will work with the students, including Christine Hershey, Tim Dang and Matthew Diamond.

USC Glorya Kaufman School of Dance Founding Director and Professor of Dance Jodie Gates has been named Cincinnati Ballet’s next Artistic Director. In her new role, Gates will set the artistic direction of the Company, as well as the Cincinnati Ballet Otto M. Budig Academy Professional Training Division, and all Academy training divisions.

2021 was an unprecedented year as the USC Glorya Kaufman School of Dance continued to navigate the safety measures accompanying the COVID-19 pandemic. The year began virtually and then transitioned to in-person learning for the fall semester. All year, the BFA students worked hard with many exciting performances both virtual and in person. As 2021 comes to a close, look back at some of these incredible moments.
