USC Kaufman graduates thank faculty for their impact

Throughout the curriculum implemented at the USC Glorya Kaufman School of Dance, BFA dance students interact with many faculty members on a daily basis. Several faculty members have assumed mentorship positions for these students, whether they know it or not.

Victor Quijada on language and lineage: teaching the RUBBERBAND Method

When USC Glorya Kaufman School of Dance Vice Dean and Artistic Director Jodie Gates asked Victor Quijada to join the school’s faculty as an Artist in Residence, there was no job description. The school did not yet physically exist: in 2014, USC Kaufman was a few rooms scattered across the university campus. Core faculty members were still auditioning the first BFA class.

Barak Marshall on residency and revolt

Last fall, Israeli choreographer Barak Marshall set excerpts of his full-length work “Monger” on USC Kaufman BFA students. This semester, he returns to teach the work again—this time, as an Artist in Residence. The opportunity to teach at USC Kaufman as a faculty member, he said, was too good to pass up.

Paul Taylor: Changing Dancers’ Lives for the Better

By Patrick Corbin, Assistant Professor of Practice

Today, a reporter for the Associated Press asked me what Paul Taylor meant to the dance world. What didn’t Paul Taylor mean to the dance world? Roz Loo, the daughter of Liz Walton, sent me a picture of Paul and Liz in an intimate cradle lift from the duet in his dance Aureole. Liz passed away earlier this year. The two of them seem to almost be kissing. Nothing extraordinary, right? Except for the fact that the publicity photo was taken around 1962 and Paul was a caucasian man and Liz was an African-American woman.
